Competitions & Level Awards

Nippers are lifeguards in training, and there is nothing quite as exciting as a Nipper competition. These events bring together clubs from across the country, creating a vibrant atmosphere of teamwork, camaraderie, and spirited competition.

Each season (pre-Covid), there were typically four to five competitions, ranging from friendly events to the prestigious Western Province Championships and, ultimately, the South African National Championships.

Competition days are high-energy, fun-filled occasions that are just as thrilling for the Nippers as they are for families and spectators. As a club, we place strong emphasis on encouraging all our Nippers to participate. It is in this setting that we see the greatest personal growth, goals exceeded, and lifelong friendships formed. Medals and podium finishes are always a delight, but they are simply a bonus to the overall experience.

To be eligible to compete, all Nippers must pass the age-appropriate lifesaving exam (Level 1, 2, or 3). The exam includes both a theoretical and a practical component. The theory covers key topics such as water safety rules, basic first aid, and lifesaving signals and procedures. The practical assessment involves a fitness test consisting of a run-swim-run, sit-ups, and push-ups.
